Differing panels in series parallel
« on: October 21, 2005, 06:17:49 PM »
I have 2 208 watt sharp solar panels and 4 80 watt solec panels.

Specs on the Sharp ND-208U1:

Open Circuit Voltage (Voc)*     36.1V

Maximum Power Voltage (Vpm)*     28.5V

Short Circuit Current (Isc)     8.13A

Maximum Power Current (Ipm)     7.3A

Maximum Power (Pmax)*     208W

The Solec specs:

Power (peak)      80 watts

Voltage (peak)     17.10

Current (peak)     4.68

Open Circuit Voltage (Voc)     21.30

Short Circuit Current (Isc)     5.01

The solec panels i have can be wired for 12 or 24 volt operation. Open circuit on them runs from 38-40vdc measured via dvm on the panels.

running 2 in series at 12vdc each i see a in ciruit voltage on the Outback of 24volts.

So the question i have is.

If i run both sharp 208 watt panels in series then 2 Solec in series @  24vdc with the 2nd pair in series and then wire the sharps and the solec in parallel how much would i be loosing from the sharps or is this optimum?

Or would it be better to wire all 4 of the solecs as 12 volt panels in series then parallel them to the sharps?

Or lastly sell all 4 of the solecs and buy 2 more of the 208 watt sharps and keep em all the same?

if anyone is interested. $275 each local pickup for the solecs. I have a source to get more at this price aswell.

Where is local pickup for these panels?

Put a diode on each string of like panels in the combiner box, this should stop parasitic power loss. Make sure the diodes can handle the full amperage. Just double check with outback to be sure the diodes in the strings wont harm your controller... they shouldn't, but check. Some MPPT controllers get fussy when you do things the PWM controllers let you get away with every day.
