rubber boot replacement??
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:45:34 PM »
A friend of mine gave me a really cool dual axis tracker. Of course im putting a PV array on it after i rebuild and paint / lube it up again.

Anyway, I need to replace the rear rubber boot that shields the back of the threaded rod from the weather (the treaded rod that acts as the drive mechanism for the elevation control).

The boot is aproximately 1.5" ID and about 2' long.

I would appreciate any help in locating a place in the US where i can order a couple of these. I searched on the internet and am having a bit of trouble.

Thanks,

RoyR

Can you post a picture of the boot and application?  Is it like the "accordion" boot that covers fork tubes on dirt bikes?

Here is a link to McMaster Carr that sells bellows which seems to be what you are looking for

Sounds like a rack and pinion boot.

I think you will have a lot of fun at your local auto parts store.

If you want something kind of basic, perhaps try a bicycle tire innertube, although it might not last a long time...  or could get twisted or pinched.

machine tools often have 'accordian' type boots that might work. often they are square, but a  little creativity will help with that.  the only problem I can see is that as soon as you say "machine tools" you move the dollar sign over a couple of decimal places.  <G>

try mcmaster, and the 4x4 shops as someone already pointed out, then a local machine tool supply distributor (they'll often help you find something in the catalog that will work and most of the guys/gals that work for such places are gadget freaks and might cut you a discount if they like you and your project.) then maybe KBC tools, <google it> littlemachineshop.com or the like.

good luck!
