Solar Backpack
« on: June 30, 2006, 07:22:11 PM »
I've just whipped up this solar backpack, two 5 watt 6v panels linked in series charging a small battery with a cig lighter socket. I found some old shelf supporters that i wedged in and put a plank across to support the battery. The battery's strapped in and the cig. plug is screwed in so it's rotatable. I then got a small metal bar to support an old backpack i had and fed the straps through it. I'm going to take it to a RE fair tomorrow.
Heres some pics:

Thats me in the last photo!

Lol. I also forgot to add that I've got a small computer connector connecting the solar panel so its reasonably easy to detach.

Great job!

Wish I had it just for camera batteries on our recent vacation.

Don't let anyone tell you it is not big enough, because it is big enough!

And BTW, I have boots older than Willib!

Looks great Angus, a little less than an amp into the batteries in full sun.  That'll be good for a radio at the fair, or even a larger load if intermittent.  Should be lots of fun.  Rich

Well I'm back from the fair now(The big tent). I just used a 12v fan (350ma) to show the power which was lucky since it was a blazing hot summers day. It could run continously, as well as extra time when we were sitting inside the black tent to listen to the talks. Everybody liked it and it was quite good. I spotted a Hugh Piggott turbine and I had a talk with Neil(One of the people who does the turbine courses). There was also a cool solar caravan thing that I saw that I thought was very good. All in all a good day.

Very nice, Angus, also your diary of the RE-fair visit.

How about a little music whilst walking with that backpack? Better bring a few friends along though to carry the rest of the system. But maybe a small radio? I do have a small LCD tv that uses only 5 watts (at 6V). Ah, the joys of a solar panel :)
