22v solar panel to 12v battery
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:14:01 AM »
Can i hook up my 22v solar panel to a 12v battery without it hurting the battery. Will the battery take the current and isolate it down to 12v. Or will it overcharge my batteries. another question is should i just get another panel that supplies only 12v. any tips would help Thank You

It would be to your advantage if you combined multiple, related questions into one post rather than posting a fresh question within a couple hours.

Your 22v panel will be a nominal 12v one. It has to supply enough volts to fully charge a 12v battery ( about 14.3v) on a hot day when the panel volts is low.

The panel will dictate the current, just ignore the nominal voltage, it will drop to battery volts when you connect it.

Also, depending upon the battery type, and the amperage output of the panel, you may also need to prevent the solar panel from overcharging the battery if you leave it connected permanently, or for long periods.  The specifics of the battery size and type, the panel rated power, and how you intend to use them would help with answering this question.  Rich
