Confused on cell
« on: August 27, 2008, 06:19:03 PM »
I have some solar cells that a freind gave to me.  On the back there are three spots to soder too. They are the positives.  Where is the Negative???  If I put a meter on it, I put the red on one of the tabs on the back and touch the very edge of the cell with the negative and then i get .5 volts.  I can soder to the tab but i can't the edge.  I am lost on these or I am just over looking somthing.  Help....  First time with cells with no wirers.  Here are two pics, front and back.

Fixed your photos to display. No clue what happened but the photo links were full of unnecessary characters. TW

you solder to the front of the cell. I see one strip  down the center of the front of the cel, this is where you would solder your ribbon wire to.

Oh, Ok.  That makes more sence now. So the front is the positive and the back is the negative?  You would not belive how many of these things that I have.  I thought I had maybe 30 at the most.  Well I was over at my parents and my dad asked me what am I going to do with the 10 boxs that my buddy droped off.  I thought when he gave them to me he ment just 10 cells. Nope 10 boxs, of 500.  So I just might make me a couple solar panels.  Thats what happens when you don't pay attention to someone and just tell them to drop them off at your parents till you can pick them up.

wow. so what you are saying is that you have 5000 cells? what are their physical dimensions? how much short circuit current do they make in full sunlight?

Well some are 6x6,  2x4, most are 4x4.  Yes there are alot, I am going to give him a call and ask where he got them.  That is alot of money sitting there for just someone to give away.

- Who couldn't use a friend or two like that. . .   You have the makings of quite a few panels.  If you match them in strings of 36 cells based upon the current out of them, then you can probably make quite a few good panels.  Rich

Hi Harley, You certainly have quite a windfall if the cells are free. If you plan on making any panels and need any advice, feel free to drop me an email. I am happy to help. JB
