Ah ok, yeah I was wondering about whether a high amperage charger coming from the AC side of the generator would be better.  That makes total sense.   I bet a 55 amp charger is a pretty penny, but worth it when you need it I am sure.  I was also mistaken on the DC charger amperage from the Honda - it says 8 amps on the front panel.  I have a 6 amp charger up there already, so I will just use that for awhile if needed.

You are right about the equalizing - that will be difficult, as it requires "overcharging" pretty much from what I read in the Deka manual today.  You have to continue charging the battery at it's finish rate charge for hours after normal.  That is 4-5 amps per 100ah, so I would need to hit it with 25 or so amps for 3 hours to properly equalize.

From the Deka bible:

Equalizing Charge -- Due to a slight difference in the construction

of each battery cell, some cells take less charge than

others. An occasional equalizing charge will correct these cellto-

cell imbalances and bring all cells up to the same capacity.

An equalizing charge is simply a 3-hour continuation of the

standard recharge at no more than the battery's finish rate. A

minimum 3 amp per 100 A.H. equalize charge rate is necessary

to receive the full benefit of the equalize charge. A lower equalize

charge rate will require a longer equalize charge period.

The 390W should get you about 25A for equalizing, but not for 3 hours.

Close to 30A with a low battery.

I am continuing this saga in my diary here:  http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2009/3/17/82817/2811

It is coming right along, although I have yet to produce 1 watt from the sun, lol.

Turns out my mother-in-law fried her heating element in her drier last week.  Since she made me fix it for her, I am keeping the wire out of it and will play with diversion soon.  Thanks for the idea!
