voltage question
« on: September 12, 2005, 02:33:03 AM »
Say an alternator is charging a 12 v system. 14.4 is the full charge. the alternator

has a power curve over say 500 rpm ,at 200 its barely getting out 12.5 volts and at

700 its putting out 16.5 v. [I am new to this stuff but Very interested.] how much is too much for a 12v system. How much above 14.4 can you go without hurting the battery?

Do you use a zener diode to catch the juice at 14.4v ? If you have a wind turbine

sending out from 12 to 18 v into a 12 v setup ,is this okay? does the battery always

pull the voltage down to the battery voltage but going up.If you llok at a microhydro

unit they usually have a meter on the front.Do you adjust the water to what the manufacturer says is 14.4v or something else? just trying to get the basics on varying voltage and how it interacts with the battery system.

Hello!

I asked similar question some time ago. you can find it at:

also, there is much more details here, just look around...

Search for "charging voltage", "regulator voltage" or so.
