12 Volt Battery Question
« on: September 01, 2006, 03:14:49 PM »
In my bank of 8 batteries, one has some sort of crude in it.  Each cell has what looks to be dust or powder, for a lack of a better word, floating in it.  The SG reading for each cell is about 1.25, about the same as the other batteries.  The batteries are 12 volt, 140 amphr, and fluid levels are correct.  The batteries are only about a month or so old.  Any idea as to what this is, and is the battery going bad?  Thanks, BEAR

I think its just something off the plates thats not been cleaned properly before the elctrolyte was put in. You should be able to syringe it off and then top up it up with distilled water if necessary. Remember to wear eye protection etc, safety first.

Well depending what it is, I would leave it alone if the batteries are working well.

I have had what looks like a little dust floating in some and just never worry about it myself.

As for syringing it out then topping with water if needed, that could work. But if you take acid out and put water in your diluting the acid. Batteries don't MAKE acid, but they boil water out of acid which does need replaced at times, but the acid is still there just not the water.

So try not to remove much acid.
