Hydrometer Question

Just a quick question asking everyone what brand, type of hydrometer you use. I have a $14 one I bought at an automotive store but don't know if it is all that accurate. It's all glass but has no temp compensation. I have seen one called EZ Red claiming to be accurate, etc. There are many, many models to choose from on the net so I'm asking you guys to help steer me to a decent one. Or, can I calibrate the one I have to make sure it's accurate?

I've got three- one from snap-on, one from napa and one of the EZ Red. Most trusted in the accuracy dept the snap-on, but for ease of use, I go for the EZ. And the EZ wont break, and seems to be quite accurate. My 2 cents.

I've got one. It is at least pre- 1950. It has a thermometer for temperature compensation and a 'spar buoy type gravity device.

Man, talk about quality and way too many choices! I guess if I have to email them for a price I probably can't afford it. Thanks for the link Chainsaw, I am going to email them anyway just to see.

Slackers, I sent a request for Hydrometer prices on the 26th from www.Freasglass.com and so far no reply. If I don't hear anything by Mon or Tues I will try again. I am really curious how much their stuff is as they really emphasize the "Hand Crafted" thing.

I have always used this style, long tube, floating thermometer/gravity indicator.


Is it worth the extra 20 dollars? I have no idea... ( I have two of 'em )


I think most people go with what they were taught with.

Just got in an EZ Red this week and I am liking it much more than the long tube one I have. Like iamdewayne said, it says it's temp compensated. How do they do that? does the little circular disk float differently at various temps? Just wondering.
