Battery prices in U.S - seem very high?
« on: November 13, 2008, 09:17:00 PM »
I was sourcing some 12v Sealed Lead Acid batteries in the U.S for an exhibition project we are preparing for in early January in California.

This U.S seller below from a Ventura, CA. company quoted me $255.50 per 110 A/h battery. Does this sound correct?

I can get 2 batteries over here (in the U.K) for that price - (Good quality ones at that, I've used them).

U.S equivelant $118.937 USD

Is it the same story elsewhere in the U.S?

Thanks

Ben.

I don't know the rate of exchange that well and also the prices here have changed drastically recently with the price of lead.

For 100Ah or thereabouts I think the price varies from £60 to perhaps twice that depending on manufacturer and technology.

How this compares with the U.S price may again depend on make and type.

If it is UPS then it is most likely VRLA and will be a fair bit more than a flooded.

If you look at  a good VRLA here such as Sonnenschein you will be shocked at the price.

A couple of months ago, Sam's Club was selling 6 volt, 220 AH golf cart batteries for about $65 each. In 1996, Sam's club was selling the same battery for about $45 each here in the U.S.

Way too high. Optima batteries shipped are much less than that.

I get my batteries at a "Surplus/Blemished" battery store.

My 135ah batteries were $45 each, 1 year ago . . .

If you just walk into a battery store and say "Hey, give me one of those", that price is in the ballpark, particularly if you're only buying one.  If you shop around, you might be able to find a lower price, but unless it's used/blemished/whatever, I wouldn't count on getting much lower than that.

Comparing golf cart batteries to SLAs isn't always a useful thing to do, as some environments require a sealed battery, and the golf cart battery ain't.

Regaring the Optimas, they only have a little less than half of the capacity he's talking about (40-50AH, depending on model), so they SHOULD be cheaper!

All options in regard to buying are too expensive. That is why it is best to build your own batteries.

The size of the project matters not.
How much magic smoke it contains does !
