Water pumping help
« on: October 19, 2004, 08:15:58 PM »
Sorry to start another thread but I have been trying all day to find a way to respond in the thread.  Something is broken.

Most of the Amish I know use a windmill to pump water, while a few use compressed air pumps.  However they usually have a pump jack for a back up.  Young couples getting started may often use as pump jack alone to power the pump to keep costs down.  A good sized resevoir is helpful and the system can be set up so that it is pressurized.

A good friend of mine has a 10,000 gallon water tower attached to his windmill.  It is an old underground gasoline tank standing on one end on a concrete pad.  He has a pump jack for back up use in case there isn't enough wind for extended periods of time.  He has only used the jack a few times in the last 15 or 20 years and has spoken of selling it someday.

It really shouldn't cost much to make your own pump jack so I wouldn't spend the $800 that Lehman's charges.  I you can get better prices elsewhere but the Lehman's Hardware website has the details.  The store in Kidron is just down the street from my wife's parents.  If you go to the store the prices are a little lower than they are on the web, and there are other stores in the community that offer the same products at lower prices.  That is where most of the locals shop.  The times I have done business with Lehman's they have been very helpful and have good customer service if you call or visit the store.
