Saw a Big Vawt
« on: March 01, 2005, 07:39:24 PM »
On the way to Lincoln yesterday, I decided to try and find a big Vawt on a farm stead that I had heard about. A man that works at Valmont mfg. and his brother? have been building, changing the project for several years. It had 3, 34ft high tapered street light poles around the perimeter that supported the top center of the turbine with cables. It must have been 40 ft in diameter. I think there were 6 arms with corragated sheet metal blades about 30 ft high. And a monster size wind vane at the top painted "jeosoff's wind power". I had heard that originally the blades would rotate 2 to 1 with chaines and sprockets, but were now under computer control. There was a small shed at the base, housing the speed up and the generator.

This was 1 mile west and 1/2 mile north  of the hiway turn off to Manly, Nebraska.

I saw it from the road and it was not spinning at the time.
