Don't Laugh ...but what am I missing :P
« on: August 21, 2004, 06:48:31 PM »
Ok here is what I have for this project...And it is supposed to storm all this week so I wanna get this thing going.

Ametek 72 volt motor and turbine.

Die Hard Deep cycle marine batt 12volt,

Two 50 foot pieces of #1 Welding cable.

Brass battery cable ends and 4 cable eyelets.

What am I missing... I think I need a blocking diode so the battery won't run the engine.

I do have a pile of used/burnt out computer power supplies and from what I understand have excellent diodes with cooling fins attached...or am I wrong...

What do I need so I can get this thing going today...While radio shack is still open (as a backup)

Thanks!

your gonna need a pole/tower a tail and a blocking diod. iirc puter power supplys have bridge rectafiers in them that will work as a blocking diod (not the best thing for use as a blocking diod but will work) they look kinda like this

just be sure to discharge the capasitors in that power supply before trying to remove the bridge or you could have a very shocking experiance (just short the leads on any capasitor looking things in there with a screwdriver being sure not to be touching the metal part of the screwdiver when ya do it)of course make sure the power supply is unpluged before you start takin it appart.

Thanks for the info!

Yah I had it up on the pole as a downwinder for a few days till I could whip up a tail so I put the blades on backwards :P...I built a tail for it late today :)

the ones in newer style computer power supplies won't look anything like that one in the picture.  But the one in the picture is one like it is reccommended that you use.

Unless you want to babysit it you'll need some kind of charge limiter - a dump load with automatic cutin or something.  Or you'll need to adjust your load every hour or so and check the meter to keep the battery from ovecharging.

If the genny is small enough you can let it run overnight if you can configure your loads so the battery will neither overcharge if the wind stays high nore get sucked below 20% if the wind stops.

Obviously playing charge controller is something you can accept for the weekend while you get it working but something that needs to be automated real soon.  B-)

Follow the multiple red wires of those power supplies to the output section.  They will connect close to a diode that looks more like a flat pack transistor on a heat sink.  Usually two diodes in one package which are good for at least 10A.  Google the part number for the exact specs, but the center pin is usually common and you can figure it out by trial and error.
