Upcoming Wind Power Workshops
« on: September 16, 2004, 09:28:55 PM »
Greetings wind lovers,

Here's some information on two wind-related workshops I coordinate:

There is still space in SEI's Wind-Electric Design & Installation workshop here on Guemes Island, Washington next month. This is taught by Mick Sagrillo, and will include installation of an AWP 3.6 meter wind generator on a 156-foot freestanding tower. This is a blockbuster installation and workshop -- one of the best that SEI offers in my opinion. I'll be supervising the tower work. In the following week, we'll be adding a PV system, with 2+ KW of PV mounted on the tower.

WIND-ELECTRIC DESIGN & INSTALLATION

Monday - Sunday, October 18-23, 2004 * Tuition $600

Participants in this workshop will learn to design and install commercial wind generator systems. The workshop will cover system sizing, site analysis, safety issues and hardware specification. Learn about the different commercially available wind turbines and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Get hands-on experience installing a full-size wind system. The workshop also discusses solar/wind hybrid systems.

Topics Include:

  • Aerodynamics
  • Generators
  • Alternators
  • Induction Machines
  • Tower Design
  • Site Analysis
  • System Sizing
  • Safety Considerations
  • Energy Storage
  • Legal Issues
  • Wind-PV Hybrid Systems

Other activities include

  • Tours of Wind-electric systems
  • Tower climbing clinic
  • Hands-on Field Installation

Next February, Hugh Piggott will be teaching his Homebuilt Wind Generators workshop in a beautiful remote mountain community in southern Costa Rica. I've had Hugh over to the NW three times now to teach folks how to build wind generators from scratch. This workshop is a blast! We'll be building a 12-foot diameter machine for the community, and working on an 8-foot machine as well. We hope to run the 12-foot machine by the end of the week. The staff will include Hugh, me, Brian Faley of Shoreline Power, and others. This is a special opportunity to learn about wind generator design and construction and spend a relaxing time in a special place in Costa Rica.

Build wind generators from scratch with Hugh Piggott

Monday - Sunday, February 21-27, 2005 * Tuition: US$650

Participants in this workshop will learn to build a working wind generator from scratch. This is a shop class, and will include carving blades, winding alternators, and constructing and assembling all parts of a wind generator.

Topics include:

  • Designing and carving wooden blades
  • Governing systems
  • Alternator theory and design
  • Yaw and tail design & construction
  • Winding coils
  • Wiring & fabrication
  • Fitting magnets into homebuilt alternators
  • Construction details

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.
