4.5" ceramic magnet
« on: October 20, 2004, 04:06:58 AM »
I have a 4.5" x 1/2" ceramic disc magnet like the one from windstuff.  I would like to now how best to use this magnet i.e. cut it up into X number of magnets or to leav it as one.  I would like to make a simple 3phase pmg from this.

Thank you Jonathan Miller

That really is small to use on its own. If you can find another one I would suggest you cut them into 6 or 8 pieces and make a 6 or 8 pole dual rotor.

If you can't find another one, cut into 8 and make an 8 pole single rotor with a rotating steel plate in place of the second rotor. I would space them further apart ( larger diameter) than in the picture.

If you overlap coils make the space between magnets half the width.

With 8 pole 6 coils side by side, make the gaps at least equal to the width.

Go for a cut in about 400rpm and you should get something useful out.
