Please advise - generator 10 kW or more
« on: November 17, 2004, 05:25:14 AM »
Please advise how dificult is to build generator 10kW (at 7-9 m/s) or more?

What is the best way, in your opinion, to made such big generator?

Just point me to the right direction :-)

Reagards,

Oscar

At 10m+ (30ft+) diameter that would be a mighty achievement! The engineering required would be substantial. The largest turbines I have seen folk making on this board are around the 5m mark. You could expect ~2.5kW at the wind speed you specify from a 5m diameter machine. If you do make any progress on this project, I'm sure that we'd all like to hear about it.

Hi,

I know some people here with about 10 kW

wind generators. Just made with one man

10 m in dia wooden experimental blades

for a 10 kW generator. We haven't

tested the wind rotor under any load yet.

I will soon post some details about

the blades.

It is not impossible. But you need

heavy metal things...

Start smaller and work your way up.  A 10 kw machine can kill somebody if it fails catastrophically.

Good luck and have fun!

I think that if you really want

to start with a 10 kW that it

is best to use some ready made

parts.

For example a car rear differential

with the wheels to fix the wind rotor

could be a good way to start. You would as

well get a ready made brake with that

rear axle.

And if you would make the wind rotor

with many blades it wouldn't

be so fast speed, to make safer.

A sail wing rotor with triangular

sails ('Cretan sail wing') might be

the easiest way to make the wind rotor.

Can't be done huh, well that's music to my ears; I like a challenge but I'll agree with Troy, start small.

After a few project's I finally got a working unit(14.5 foot blades 2KW) but I only started making some headway after ordering and studying Hugh Piggot's axial windmill plan's.

That said I'm planning to make a 5 KW unit next year and if all goes well, I'm going for 10 KW.

A few people here in my area tried to build a working wind generator but failed (mostly because of strong winds we get here)and said it couldn't be done.

Saying it can't be done just drives me to try harder, I say never underestimate the power of the internet.

I didn't take many pictures when I was building my unit but next year I'll do some step by step on my next year's project to help out the comunity build bigger units.

Bigger IS better.

Maybe I'll skip the 5 KW model and go for Gold ;)

I don't think anyone said it was impossible, just that it won't be easy - especially for a first timer. I for one would certainly like to hear that someone was successful building a 10kW wind turbine! Hope to give it a go myself one day...

Anyone know where I can buy a 10kW AC generator (alternator)?
