160 volts into a 24 volt bank
« on: December 27, 2004, 02:09:58 AM »
Can I use a my 4 kw 120 volt wind genny to charge a 24 volt battery bank as long as I diversion control it say 28 volts, A company oline that produces wind genny's says you can, but doesnt reference this high of a dc voltage?

All help is appreciated, I will get this thing up and flying

You will need to use a step down transformer.

Just hooking up directly will have the turbine badly stalled. To a 120volt turbine a 24volt battery would overload the turbine at 20% of it's designed cut in speed.

I hooked it up to my 24 bank and as I held the meter on the terminals my wife spun the generator by hand and and I noticed a increase of .1 to .2 volt incease and at the time we were at 24.9dc. I didnt notice alot of dificuty with start up

Russ: It will charge your 24v bank of batteries and it may preform as an extra low wind machine. However as mentioned above it may have a hard time starting in the wind. You'll just have to try it out.

The prop has to achieve a certain speed before it starts absorbing the entire wind energy available in the disk area. If it runs too slow, it can't come up to the proper tip speed.

4kw \ 120v = 33.3 amps so if you charge into a 24v battery bank, at best you will only be able to charge 33.3 amps or about 1/5th what you could do if you were to buy 3 transformers (if your wind plant is 3 phase) and step your current / voltage ratio down properly. Unless you use transformers to step it down you are making use of only 20% of your wind generators capabilities.

But it shouldn't harm it if you want to try running it as you suggested.
