Wiring up Coils
« on: January 22, 2005, 07:51:45 PM »
Is this the right diagram to use for wiring my 9 coils ,3 phase, Star, for 48 volt? All coils are layed down with turns the same?.(Clockwise). I want to encase all the wiring in the resin with just brass posts sticking out. Can I just solder all the connections and use 'brush-on' electrical tape before pouring my mould?  Appreciate any and all comments, Thanks

Hi Shadow -

yes - that will work.

All the coils lay down the same way (same side up) and you've wound them all the same direction.

Once all the connections are made in each phase, then tie either A,B and C together, or X, Y and Z.  That would put it into Star.  (whichever 3 you dont tie together will be the output)

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Something doesen't seem right here

If there are also 9 magnets per rotor, then each coil set will be under an odd number of poles. For instance coil set #1 will have

the 1st coil under a North

the 2nd coil under a South

the 3rd coil under a North

in this situation one coil in each set will be out of phase and canceling out half the voltage.

I think it is 12 magnets per rotor.

Yes There will be 12 magnets. This is where I'm at now. wired as above diagram, soldered A,B,C together soldered X,Y,Z to brass posts.Coils are not in there exact position yet, but I marked lines at 40 degrees so If I keep the coils in between those lines and up against the center Island, I should be ok as far as phases lineing up with magnets? As with my coil winder I made the mould out of Puckboard, I'm not sure what others use for soldering but I used this little butane torch and it worked awesome! Perfect for melting enamel, and fine little flame for soldering. Refillable and $7.00 at Walmart.I'm hoping to cast this tomorrow so if anyone sees anything I'm overlooking please comment. Thanks.

Im just a few min behind you... hoping to cast late today or tomorrow on my new machine!

Looks really nice shadow!  One thing I do differently (which doesnt matter really) is I try to make all the connections between the coils on the inner diameter of the stator.    The reasons are...

- I like to keep the connections inside 'cause it looks nice (and you've got that)

-like you, I often have the stator hardware pretty close to the coils and I like to be sure I can drill in between the coils w/o hitting any copper.  I bet you'll be fine though  -but it might come close!
