Glad to tell you about this exiting project we just launched 8th April 2006. It the first of its kind in Taita-Taveta District. A community owned wind power station. It serves over 30 homes a school and a dispensary with 240Volts AC power.
These homes were previosly using parafin which is Ksh 80/= per litre. A litre lasts only a week for the small homes while bigger homes use upto 10 littres a month lighting pressure lamps, etc. Movement at night was only possible by using a drycell torch. Two drycell batteries cost Ksh 120/= and last a week. Now they can walk from one house to the other at night due to the security lights mounted on several power supply poles. They will save over Ksh 500/= monthly on paraffin and torch cells.
After they pay for the loan which will take 26 months they will fully own this project and decide on their own what rates to put on the units of power.
This village stands on a steep rocky hill Goe -- where wind from the Kenyan coast line blows strongly.
This is a project which can be replicated in several rural Africa settings. Not all rural people are able to purchase our equipment therefore such a project will enable the poorest to have light.
