18 foot 16 inch duel rotor
« on: May 22, 2006, 01:56:22 AM »

Tower is triangle shape using one inch pipe Sch. 40 each corner. IT is 50 foot high with the section of 4 inch pipe on top.

Side view of spring that was added to hyd. cylinder to help furl return.

Back view showing the spring loaded cylinders on each side of the main shaft, that provide a sort of shock absorber when the furl comes back to a horz position, and comes to rest on the stop support.

This shows the terminal connections for star and delta.

View from top of tower overlooking the Mississippi river.

This turbine is of 16 mags, each rotor, and 12 coils with a air space of 3/4 inch.

The coils are made from #15 wire with 60 turns two in hand. all this can be seen in my previous posts.

So far, I have tested in 12 volt and 24 volt. In 12 volt, it stalls at + or - 40 RPM.with a output of between 2 and 7 amps. It is almost continuous 24/7 even if there seems to be no wind at all. I have watch it in 30 mile an hour winds, and still it stays in stall. Being I am not off grid, and only use the power for some things in the house and for back up, Im very impressed, and even tho I wired it for 48 volt, Im thinking about up grading my 12 volt bank to high amp hour batterys and keep it 12 volt. No worry about overspeeding, no furling, no ware and tear on the blades. I have watched it now for 4 weeks and have only saw it not put out amps once. Most of our winds are 5 to 10 miles an hour. I like the way it just chugs along at 40 Rpm and puts out power 98% of the time.

In 24 volt in 30 MPH winds, it very quickly buried the needle on my 50 amp gauge, and did have quite a bit of flexing on the blades. It did start to furl, just as I shorted it out cause it was flexing very close to the tower. I have since adjusted the turbine up a little to gain clearance.

I do not know at this time if high winds will overcome the stall in 12 volts, which would probley put it in trouble due to being so powerful.

I plan on building another one this winter, that will do the same thing in 48 volts, which of course would mean alot bigger coils, and maybe bigger mags. At this time, I am thinking 20 inch rotors and 22 foot blades. Im kind of waiting to see how dans big one checks out.

Great fun, Harrie

Beautiful rig. You have potentially a lot of watts available. Keep up the good work.

Hi jon; It is a triangle home built. much like the triangle tv antena towers you have probley saw, except this one is made from alot more heavy pipe. I have only 3 3/8 guys holding it, but than it is only 50 foot tall. My son is putting up a 90 foot fire tower he bought from a guy that had purchased it from the state, so someday we plan on putting it on top of that tower.

Oh ya, the total weight is around 300 lbs, the yaw bering pipe and shaft pipe are 3/4 inch thick  wall 3 inch outside dia, so that alone weighs alot. And thanks for the comments.

hey Shadow, come on over, I will climb up behind you and hold you to the tower!ha. Thanks for the comment. I suppose you are building another one as we speak. With your cool paint jobs, it would be a shame of you stoped now!

Great fun, Harrie

Yes, I like it! I am starting to get the feeling that these are like Lay's potato chips. The machines are getting big. I was surprised to see two 18' turbines up and posted on the same day. Great machine well done!

It looks really good.

Thank you for posting good pictures.

The quality of the work looks really excellent.

I like especially the stator support system, which looks robust and simple.

Have you tried at 12 V by adding some resistance on line, for example a water heating element?

How much was there RPM at 24 V, 30 mph wind?

Harry - very nice machine.  Thanks for the great pics.

You said the blades were getting close to the

tower.  How much clearance do you have?

Hi Hannu. I have no way of measureing RPM on the tower, but when I tested it in the shop, 24 volt cut in was 50 RPM. and 48 volt was if I remember, between 100 and 110 RPM.Im sure when It peged the Meter, it was probley around 75 RPM, and the blades did put out a slight whisele noise.

The problem with the clearance, was that I made the turbine to only mount in a 4 inch dia pipe tower off the top of my sons fire tower, so the clearance would not have been a problem, but when I ended up puting it on the triangle tower for awhile, I only had about 3 inches from the points of the triangle. It was a easy fix tho for a tilt back, I merely shimed up the furl alittle, so now I have about 8 inches. One of these days, I plan on trying it in 48 just for kicks to see what it will do. In light winds I must add. Ha. I dont want to destroy it before the kid gets it!

How does the Star/Delta connection work?  Do you switch one or the other in at your battery bank depending on wind speed or voltage desired?

The star/Delta conection, is only changed to either or at the stator itself. It is just a matter of moving wires around.

Thanks all for comments, I can always use suggestions, or constructive critisism.

Hi willib, there is no slip rings on this machine. Yes, Im about 60 miles from the source of the river.

Great windmill and site.

My fiance' and I paddled the Mississippi River in 73 days last summer in association with the Audubon Society. I'm guessing you're up around the Bemidji area. I'd paddle that section again in a heartbeat.

Our site is www.source2sea.info if you want to check that out.

LOL - my brother offered to drop ship his trolling motor a bunch of times.

The Mississippi River is an amazing resource that's for sure.

Guys;

What, exactly, does this have to do with the original story.

This type of getting off the story topic is very unfriendly to the original poster and is known as hijacking.

I would put in a request that the powers that be here start to enforce some type of topical enforcement policy on story comments.

Just another way this resource is being ruined in my opinion.

These wanderings detract from the purpose of this resource.

There, I said it. Been bugging me awhile.

Sorry this is off topic too but I think it needs to be said.

Here is where we get even more off topic when you tell me how unfair such a policy would be.

Sorry to contribute to a hyjack.

I figured anything related to something the original poster may find interesting was OK.

His photos show the wind potential, compared to here in the woods.
