2.4m surviving the storm
« on: January 18, 2007, 07:29:25 PM »
Hi, this is my first post just to break the ice. This is our 2.4m Hugh Piggott turbine surviving storm force winds in Ireland. Last nights storm did some damage around the country, tossing trees and the like with the highest recorded gust since 1941 of 148 km/h near Dublin on the east coast. But the AF survived it well, it's been flying now for six weeks and I will take it down in the next few weeks to see if all is well. Thanks for a great board.

All the best, Jimmy

Are the blades bent back , or is that the camera angle?

Thanks but I did not make the turbine I bought it in kit form from a guy by the name of Conner Coady he made it from stainless steel and the blades are larch I'm very impressed with the design and now want to build a larger one my self 10' or bigger (addiction!! is their a 12 step program for it ) we don't have a very good site for wind so the more we get from low winds the better. I have two more that we will be putting up for other people in the next month or so and will take photos and post them if anyone is interested.

Good luck with those other units . Always a kick to see new gensets installed .Installing those will put you in the park  with Hugh's book  for ready reference.

Where are you in Ireland? I am building a DanB 10 footer and hope to raise it shortly but I have never seen another home brew turbine in the country. I am in North Armagh about 20 miles West of Belfast.

Cheers

Godspeed to you my friend. Get some local readings of the wind near the turbine. Data is crucial. Behaviour differences if there are any. How far inland are you exactly?

Be sure to inform us of what the rest of the system is and how the entire installation has fared also, not just blades and the turbine. You obviously have a good grasp on getting it properly in order.

Hi Eirbyte,

I'm in Wicklow - I lost three Marlec Rutland 913s in those winds - it says a bit about the wind and the Marlecs too.

Good to see your big turbine surviving.  I half built a Hugh Pigott turbine (blades and stator done, rotors half done and nothing done with the welding) but then I got side tracked with building a house.
