Cast my stator today.
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:29:41 AM »
It is in the mould setting up right now, the coils were all wrapped around the circumference with five wraps of scotch 35, all connections were in brass tubing crimped and soldered, all the connection wires were wrapped with scotch 35 also.

Fabricator,

I like it! Looks like you took my advise and insulated the phases and coils about as much as practical!

This should hopefully guard you against shorts (like my recent one).

I assume that the stars are where the wires/bolts will come out of the mold? Another suggestion would be to move #2 and #3 closer this will give you the line between #1/#2 in which to attach a stator support.  Assuming that you are using 6 attachment points that means a hole in the stator at a point between every other coil.

Before potting, put some wax on the bolt threads to make cleaning them up easier as well.

are those coils vinyl jacketed wire or enameled magnet wire?

Looks good.  What size wire and # turns did you end up going with?

Very  nice Job! I'm trying to figure out your coil arrangement,Is it 4 coils per phase? Good work.

You are correct, your shorted stator post is the sole reason for all the tape, it's nice for once to have somebody else doing the guinea pig thing ;)

All the power out wires are about an inch apart right in the muddle of the #2 section.

I melted stick wax on the mould first then paste waxed the whole thing, it fell right out today, there are a few bubble hole that need filling but other wise looks pretty good.

fabricator,

After thinking about it a bit I've come to realize that using tape around the perimeter of the coils will inhibit the resin from saturating into the outside edges of the coils.

May not be a big deal, but if you are going to insulate the coils from each other perhaps using a non-conductive spacer might be preferable.
