Building My Fist F&P Wind Generator
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:08:55 PM »
Hi All

I have been reading the posts in this forum and have decided to jump in and build my first wind generator. I have purchased the F&P and mounting weldment from randysworkshop.com

I have read a lot of posts about the F&P so not to reinvent the wheel and to make sure I get the most out of my generator I have a few questions.

  1. What wiring configuration should I use star, delta ? My average wind speed is 12-15 mph with recorded gusts to 50 mph.
  2. What brand and size blades work best on the F&P for my wind speed ? Two that I found are the Windmax and Windy Nation WindGrabber blades.
  3. How many watts will I see from the F&P at say 10,15,20,25 mph winds ?

I can't wait to get started.

Thanks in advance

George

Hi George

I think you may have sent me a message about asking these same questions, sorry I didn't get back to you.

What F&P model do you have ( http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/WhatFP.asp ), what is your system voltage, and what are you planning to use for blades?

Hi Glenn

I'm not sure what F&P model I have as I don't have it yet.  I ordered it from randysworkshop.com and he said he would ship it Monday so I should get it mid week.

I'm open to suggestions for the system voltage and blades.  My first thought is go 24v for the system voltage and as far as the blades I have two in mind, the frist is the Windy Nation 80" WindGrabber blades and the other is the WindMax 8.5' blades.

Another thought I had was the star or delta issue, for this I will probably start with the star configuration and if all goes well add a 2nd F&P to the same mill wired in delta to get the best of both worlds.

I know a lot of people have done a lot of r&d on these units and I just want to get started in the right direction with this project.

Thanks for the help.

Once you get the F&P, have a look at the link above to work out what type it is, and then we can take it from there.

24 or 48 volt is better than 12v for sure, less loss and easier to re-wire for.

Do you have links to those blades, I'll like to have a look a them.

The motor is made by Fisher & Paykel for Whirlpool.  It is the latest production model 60 with the latest production 48 pole magnetic hub.  And Yes, I just got another shipment if anyone else is interested in getting one.
