Sounds like stator resistance, as well as the air gap is in play.  My own mill, 48V nom system, stops in around 1 revolution, even in a gale.  I have 300 turns per phase of 1.25mm in a star config.  12x2"x1/2" rounds per rotor disk.  Winding for low resistance and using say a capacitor voltage multiplier, or a boost MPPT to give low wind output gives outstanding braking performance and more power all ways.

Hi Ronn,

It might not be what everyone uses but its probably what most people use....I used it, but hey, I'm still trying to get my tower up.....They say on a 1/4 cable the working limit is about 1/4 of the breaking stength...I beleive the working limit is 1200-1600 lbs and a breaking strength of about 6000-7000 lbs.

7x19 cable is fairly common, I would think that about 90% of the folks are using it....but can only guess.

 All the best,

 Gavin

well I lightend the tail by changing it to 3/16 birch ply with reenvorcing strips, and stiffend up the pole with another set of guy wires 10 feet below the top set.  I had some 30 mph winds yesterday and it was much better,  no more flexing of the pole and it started furling at 600 watts or so, and peaked at 35 amps (950 watts), much safer!  I couldn't tighten up the air gap any more due to main bearing wobble.  I'll have to wait for the next storm to see how she fares... thanks again for all you guys help.  Roger

Praise be to God of the universe, who gives us WIND for power.
