Turbine blade tips.

When I was younger my granddad owned a Cessna, and I remember them taking it to a
shop at great expense to have a kit installed on the wings that would allow for
shorter take off/landings. I remember that the tips were curved slightly
downwards, and they explained to me at the time that it helps keep more air under the wing to cause more lift.



Every turbine blade tutorial/picture/post/website shows pretty basic tips on ends.
Would something like a lip cause more lift/efficiency? I could not find the
exact kit they had but did find this interesting picture...



Has anyone spent any time looking into this or something similar?

You seem to be the site oracle, has the idea of using a ducted fan arrangement to enable higher tip speeds with less noise and vortex losses been discussed. I got no hits from a site search.

Thank you for the link, it helped a lot. It would appear that the right tip can significantly increase performance. Now I just have to figgure out what im going to make it out of, and how to duplicate.

Here's a photo I've always liked that illustrates the tip vortex.





The size of the vortex is exagerated because the plane is flying at a very low altitude, well within "ground effect".

That picture is from Popular Science magazine!!! I have the issue and they were analyzing the posibility of wing tip turbines able to use the energy these vortex create. The turbines were either going to drive hydraulic pumps or electric gennys :)

O.K. So where's the similar picture showing the effect of adding winglets.  Why do they always do half the job?
