Need help on a savonius project
« on: August 11, 2005, 08:39:22 PM »
Hi guys,

Last night I got a simple idea for some (hopefully) savonius fun.

It actually might attract quite some more people to start building their own windmill thing :)

Anyway, since I do not have so much resources available, and there isn't any decent magnet shop available (germany and the u.s. are best options available, here in The NEtherlands), I need some help on the basics of the windmill.

Especially after my previous attempts, which haven't been very motivating yet :). Either because of bad magnets (HD magnets)/coils (old vacuum engine :P), or not the tool available to extend the shaft to the simple printer motor thing.

This time, I really want to get a good thing going :)

I need to power a few LED lights, let's say 10.

They have a max amperage of 20ma and max 4 volt. so, if I'm correct that's either:

  1. ma
  2. volt

or

  1. ma
  2. volt

?

An incredibly low value for you die hard windmill builders :).

I got two reasonable big magnets left from my earlier windmill attempts.

These are enormously strong, that I cannot take it appart when they are together (except for trying to shift them loose).

Note that this thing is dual pole on the top, like all harddisk magnets.

Now is my question, how many coils would I need, an estimate of windings and AWG size? I know that it's like answering the unknown, but I'm sure you guys have some idea of what type of wire I need? :)

It's a savonius, and the size isn't completely sure. I just need to generate the above amount of energy. If that's possible with the two magnets, otherwise I'll have to get some magnets from somewhere.

One second thing (offtopic):

Many people have seen those wizards ("Add/remove hardware", "Internet setup") in Windows and stuff...

Maybe it's an idea to try to make something simple like that (in PHP, asking questions what kind of windmill you are building, estimate voltage, and to give some simple information if you need lots of windings, thick or thin wire, etc?

I could easily work that out in PHP, if I had the appropriate answers, might be an interesting 'utility'. If possible ofcourse :).

Regards,

Almar

i think you have too many variables for anyone to help with your questions .

Sorry maneer, I ken je neit helepe. Mij Hollandse is ook neit zo goot.

4 jaar ould hep ik ongecommen oop Canada.  Now I'm 52.

I'm Frisian not Dutch ;).

Windmills fascinate me, but the problem is my limited supply of tools. I got this really great idea right now. I just got back here to reead even more, since my first coil tests are horrible. I get like less than one volt and < 12mA. I made many windings (100+).

Might be because of the harddisk magnet (which is very strong), but the fact that I can never have one coil get one volt, bugs me a lot :(. Maybe it's the wire, the magnet, or something else..

(btw, I understand you came to Canada when you were 4? :P)

I have read some more, and I'm assume that my savonius should make like 100 RPM, with some decent wind (I hope), I just need the above voltage/amperage. Anyone have an idea for AWG? I'm considering maybe to buy some magnets:

Q-19-13-06-N

19,1 x 12,7 x 6,4 mm (0.7 inch, 0.5inch, 0.2 inch)

vernickelt - nickel

Magnetisierung: N40 (grade)

Haftkraft: ca. 6,5 kg (lifts about 32 lbs I think)

http://www.supermagnete.de/magnets.php?group=blocks_medium

Any advice on coil windings? :)

Hello,

you might start with the plan

available at:

http://www.picoturbine.com/projectlist.htm

'PicoTurbine 250 Blade Design Plan'.

You might try calculating

the approximate RPM

by assuming that the tip of

vane will travel about 2/3 of

the wind speed.

(Or what is the

the estimate by 'WindstuffEd'?)

You might try calculating

the power at different

wind speeds (v) to be able

to make a suitable generator.

I think that a suitable formula

is something like:

0,15 x Area x (V x V x V)

= Power in Watts.

(The Area in meters

and the wind speed in m/s.)

Hi,

Thanks - I'll study those plans. I should have rememberd the picoturbine site! :)

btw, your site seems to be non existant anymore :( :)
