Coil windings price
« on: October 11, 2005, 10:03:01 PM »
I'm trying to build a PM generator from scratch using the Piggot design (with some alterations).  I've just looked at the windings in the stator (enameled copper - 14 or 17 ASW) and if my calculations are correct, 110 mm = about 4 in.  Times 4 sides, times 100 turns, times 8 coils.  That's a bit over 1000 feet of wire.  I've called in and gotten a quote from a major wire manufacturer/distributor and it's between $90 and $110 depending on the gauge (not including shipping).  Was this an unrealistic discovery somehow, or should I have expected this?

That looks nice, youngun, thanks for the lead.  In Piggot's book the wire is required to be enameled.  This wire is not.  Is that a problem?

magnet wire is assumed to be enameled; otherwise it'll be 'bare copper' wire or some such.  the spools usually specify the type of insulation.  Get the seller to take a clear photo of the spool label to be sure.

BUT: if they're advertizing 'magnet wire' that's 'film' insulated and looks like the wire you'd find in a motor, then you're probably in good shape.  if it's not insulated, or has opaque plastic on it, it won't do.

However, the $0.10/ft price is not out of line by what the host of this forum is charging for  #14AWG magnet wire.  (click on wondermagnet in the upper right, then on 'products' then on 'magnet wire.')

Generally speaking, do not buy from those who only offer UPS for shipping as this same item can ship anywhere in the US for $7.70 by Priority mail. It appears to be stranded wire and I doubt the insulation is real good if it's flexing that much. And $0.10 per foot for magnet wire is outrageous. Shop !
