Disks steel of 35 cms. with thickness 4 mms.
« on: October 15, 2005, 08:05:24 PM »
I have available two disks of 35 mms. of diameter and 4 mms to build a genny of Piggott of 3,6 meters diameter. Are 4 mms of thickness enough?

Thanks (translation software)

If they will remain ridge under the stress of your magnet attraction and can be machined to the bearing ok .I think you'll be stuck with some magnets that are going to limit the amperage at 4 mil.

I think they're a bit on the thin side @ 4mm.  I think it will reduce flux and they may  warp.  It might work... it seems risky to me.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Just a side-question: what happens if one uses a wooden disk?  Is the loss in flux so big?

yes.  It is bad enough having to have an air gap for the coils, you need a good magnetic conductor at the back of the magnets. Iron or mild steel is the only thing to use.

It may be possible to use something to add strength to thin steel plates but it is much better to use adequately strong plates in the first place. If they are strong enough to handle the attractive forces they will be adequate to carry the flux.
