Can an 01 Whisper H40 be changed from 24v to 12v or?
« on: October 25, 2005, 10:40:01 PM »
I've searched everywhere and called Southwest Windpower who never seems to have a tech support person available to answer one quick question.  Someone in my area is selling 2  2001 Whisper H40's for $500 apiece.  They were only used 4 months and are basically new but are 24v and I'm running a 12v system.  Can I make one of these work with my system.  I currently have homemade 99v and 40v ametek pm dc motor mills running to 4 golf cart batteries and am using a Trace C35 controller and dump load.  I know you can change the voltage on the new Whisper 100's, but how about the h40's.  Or could I leave it at 24v and use my C35 like I'm doing now.  I could also change to 24v's I guess but all my lights and tv are 12v.  Hate to pass one up at this price.

Thanks

Scott

You could by-pass the diodes and put a 2:1 buck transformer in...

Here is an article about converting from 6V to 12V...

I assume what you are looking for is similar.

Another similar circuit with the abiltity to vary voltage.

I haven't tried either of these, and don't know how easy it is to scale up to handle your amps.

Another option would be to run 2 x 12V banks in serial, then pull half of your power from one - 12V bank, and half the power from the second 12V bank.

Not sure what would happen if you push 24V back into your 12V battery bank.  Presumably if your amps aren't too high, the batteries will absorb it, although it may be at a reduced efficiency.
