Blade extensions - would you even want them?
« on: November 19, 2005, 05:52:29 AM »
...would it make sense to take big blades like these Tuf-lites (

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2005/11/18/182145/22) and extend them another 50% or so - if you could?  I started thinking about it when I realized that you can set the blade angle in the hub.  So, you could set them in really steep, and add your extensions with a flatter angle.  Wouldn't that allow for higher speeds?  But wouldn't it also defeat the expected low speed start-up advantage of fat blades?  What say you!?

HUH, I think if your extending them longer you get a slower speed but more torque. Extend them wider/fatter it could be a mess with air foil and drags, bad air flow for the next blade etc.. Maybe self induced turbulance?

Probably best to just build a proper set for the gennie intended for instead of modifing a set built for something else.

As for steep center and flat ends, I think that's the purpose of a little twist built in.

Hmm, did anything I say cover what you meant?

much more likely to contact tower from flex when simply adding length, whole blade needs to be upgraded to take extra wind loading...

i think i would extend them from the ends or tips.

not from the hub.

with the low end robbing twist.

a steep angle of attack will give you low end,

but take from the top end.

on them low wind days you'ld wish you did or didn't.

then on them big wind days you wish you didn't, or did.

ya know.

got wind?
