Magnet wire?
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:01:04 PM »
zubbly,

The windings I took out of my 7.5hp were wound 3 in hand with .028" wire.  I want to wind with just one in hand.  What gauge do I need to buy?  Do I take the circular mils X 3?

thanks

The wire mils defines the current carrying capability, so, you can make them with more or less wires in parallel, but the total MILS to be equal to be able to carry the designed or desired current.

Hello Goose!

the .028 wire is a #21 gauge. circular mill area of a #21 wire is 812 circular mills.

so 3#21 wires would equal 2436 circular mills.

  1. #16 gauge is 2580 circular mills
  2. #16.5 gauge is 2300 circular mills

so take your pick!  the difference between the 16 & 16.5 gauge is very little compared to the total of the 3 original #21 wires.

if you noticed that the original coils filled the stator slot very tightly, i would use the #16.5   if it seemed to be a little loose with some visible extra room, use the #16.

if you have trouble to get #16.5 magnet wire, 1#19 and 1#20 in hand will equal the #16.5

good luck!
