Hugh Piggott 12 foot turbine
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:54:17 PM »
 Hi everyone

My name is Luis and i live in Puerto Rico.I been reading this forum every day for over a year and have with the help of Hugh Piggott book and this forum ,build a 8ft wind turbine that has been up for about a year. Now ,I got the new book to build the 12 ft one butI need some help.

   1. How many turns per coil and what size wire to use for a 24 volt system.?

   2. Can I use the same type of furling system as in the 8 fit machine and what would be the length of the tail and the size of the tail vane.?

   3.Can I use 2" water pipe for a 60 ft tower.?

4.I live in a slow wind area I seldom see 15 mph wind so what can I do to make it work better in low wind.?

   Thanks

    Luis

Looking at Hugh's book, for 12 volt he calls out 13 AWG 2 in hand for 25 turns.  I believe for 24 volt you would use one in hand for 50 turns.  Should consume the same amount of space. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Hugh calls for a 6 foot tail vane and the tail itself is 5ft tall and 3ft long with the forward leading edge tapered back from the vane to the top and again to the bottom intersecting 13inches forward of the back vertical edge of the tail. Mounted on the vane the back over hangs the vane by what looks like 4".  Do you have the 2005 edition or the older? Page 55 on the 2005 edition. Looks like a whale tail to me.  On the water pipe...ooooh...from what I've seen on this post 2inch folds up like a straw!!!  Check out southwest wind powers tower kits that use pipe and the site will hopefully lead you in the right direction 4" or up structural steel pipe.

Cheers,

John

You're right.  Twice the voltage, half the current, same internal losses at any given amount of power delivered.  Fits the same space.

Or check with your local well driller for well casing pipe, or worn out drilling pipe.  You might find a bargain there.
