Portable Windmill
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:10:45 AM »
I sat on the Beach of my favorite camping spot. Every night the wind coming off the lake was steady and got me to thinking. I need a windmill that I can take with me when I go camping. Here is what I came up with.

20 watts with a 20 mph wind. She whispers at that speed. Sitting on an old 20' fiberglass windsurfer mast. The blade is made of aluminum and is removable by a single stainless 1" machine screw. The tail is also removable. I have a larger picture in my files under PortablePower2.jpg.

The unit is a three phase ceramic magnet genny with diodes built in to the body. Here is the yaw slip ring unit and bearing assembly. Now all I need to do is  go camping this summer and field test it out. Joe

Neat!

Tell us more about the genny. Doesn't look homebrew. What did it start life as?

Come on!

This is not fair; getting us all excited and worked up, and then stopping when it gets interesting...

More please. Pictures of the alternator? mechanics, electronics, prop, details of slip rings, etc.etc.
