Considering wind power
« on: May 02, 2006, 05:56:27 AM »
I just moved to south central colorado - san luis valley - We own 5 acres in the sangre de cristo ranches where the wind blows everyday like clock work. With gusts up to 90mph I don't know if a wind system could stand up. What do you think

Maybe a rather large mill (17 footer comes to mind) with progressive stators.  By that I mean two or three "extra" stators that come on line sequentially at certain RPM's to help create more resistance to the blades.  Then when everything gets too much, the handy dandy furling system kicks in.

I might be just complicating things here, but to me when you start talking about everything from no wind to hurricane forces, you gotta' have a flexible system, right?

But, if you search my posts, you'll see I'm FAR from anything resembling an expert on these things.  Take anything I say with a VERY large pinch of salt!!  :)
