Test results on 10 ft Machine
« on: May 20, 2006, 11:31:22 PM »
well we ran the test voyage today didnt get a lot of data as the batterys where to full we where rolling about 20mph seing about 20 amps and clicked over to voltage and wow it was up to like 58 volts the poor batteries where boiling so if my math was right we where seing about 1160 watts. it was furled about half way at 25 mph seems to furl about right i think a little on the side of safety. here are a few more pics

this one shows the big trees i have to get above. the tower is going about half way out towards the bigger tree. the biggest one here measures 62 ft and is coming down anyhow so if i build th tower in the 90 ft range 4 21 ft pipes and a 5ft stub for mill i should be above it.

these show the car mount a little better

Any one know a good place to get guy wire cheap? all my local suppliers seem a little high. what should i expect to pay for 1/4 in and 3/8 in and 1/2 in?

i saw in one of DanB's posts where someone  was  using a tree as a tower . just a thought .

the way you calculate the power is take the battery voltage times the current into the battery

As for guy wires, I would go look at places that would sell closeline wire.  Good tensile strength, designed for loading/unloading cycles, generally corrosion resistant.

If you can't get it in a thick enough variety for you, double them up.

Would be my plan of attack if I were putting up a tower tal enough to warrant guy wires.  But so far that's not looking too good for me as I live in an airport exclusion area.  Therefore I need to keep it on the low (more smaler mills than one big one)....

Hi, I bought my cable from a shop called Quality Fasteners. They are a tool, and hardware store for industrial buisness. They are sorta like Grangers. I would check any industrial store in your area. Even if they have to order it, it will be alot cheaper than going to regular hardware store.

I would be careful with the five foot stub. Unless you can fasten it real good. I wouldn't want a hinge point above the last set of guy wires. I made my top 12', and my guys ended up in the middle of it. I didn't like that. I did make a good conection tough. I had a tight fit with a 12" coupler that I drilled and taped with 1/2" bolts. plus I drilled holes and welded them closed, and welded the bottom of the coupler right to the tower section. I wouldn't weld in a circle on water pipe though. the pipe would be apt to break at the weld. My pipe is 7/16" thick on the wall, so I wasn't afraid. Nice looking mill. I would have been scared to test drive it. My luck it would of yawed from a cross wind and crashed.

Nice mill.

Out of curiosity, I see you house windows are black, are you doing something solar with them?

well maybe i can find a way to go from 4 inch to the 2 inch needed for yaw beering without doing it as a 5 ft stub i will see what i can think up as i could do 4 inch the whole way and just a short stub of 2 inch for the yaw beering

Great looking machine.

I just bought some steel cable the other day at Lowe's.  It was 48¢/ft. for 3/16 cable.    They did have everything from 3/32 to 1/2 but I didn't price them...sorry.

Check with the home improvement stores in the area.  They might have just what you need.

I bought 3/16 wire rope at the local Hardware store ( wooden floor, bins of nuts and bolts, a REAL hard ware store) for $.08 a foot a while back. Real wire rope not that clothes line crap.

Great looking machine as for a YAW try to find a telescoping 2" basement support They are about 4 feet and they fit nicly inside one another. I used one for a 10' that had the right ratio of YAWing with out much room to shake.
