10kw Wind turbine, but need an alternator for the jobb
« on: July 19, 2006, 09:07:47 AM »
Hello.

For I while now I`ve been thinking on building me a wind turbine, but since it`s quite a big projekt I don`t know if I will start on it or not. I hopefully find it out in the planning prosses. The spec. for the wind turbine will be: 10kW alternator (AC generator), 3 (maybe 4) blades of plastic or aluminum and a tilt-up tower on 15-20 meters. And i want to build this system for grid-connection. One of the thinks I need help to is to find a suitable 10kW alternator (AC generator) for the jobb. (must have one with 3-phase, 230v and 50HZ. same spec as the "local grid"). Beacuse I can`t start designing the tilt-up tower, blades, tail and body until I`ve desided alternator, and get all the information about it.

So, do anyone have suggestion for an alternator? Do I need a gearbox? The wind-speed in the area is mostly around 12-13mph.

If you think you are going to synchronise a 3 phase synchronus alternator you are in for a disappointment.

The only thing within your capability is an asynchronus generator. Look for a  15 hp 3 phase induction motor, you can find them anywhere.

Spend a month reading about what you want to do and come back with more questions.

Read the archive of posts here, and when you do build start with a small unit first so if it fails or is disappointing you wont have lost a lot of money and time, but you will have some experience. When you have mastered ( or at least have experience)the various areas involved then go for a big Alternator.

You need an induction motor as stated above, and yes, you do need a gearbox.

See this thread too: http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/7/2/8853/36057

It is clear that by reading your message that the electrical knowledge you have is limited, and as well, the same goes for the Wind Mill, and wind experience.

You should spend a good deal of your time to investigate and learn about your 10 KW project to avoid having a "big hole in your pocket" for the money to disappear.

If one follows your way, which seems to "reflect" that is too easy to have a GOOD 10 KW tied to the GRID Wind Mill - One my discover that a GRID tied wind mill,in this case maybe extremely difficult to connect .

Knowledge first, careful planning second.

I've got to know...  what is so magic about 10Kw?  The hosts of this board are happy with their brand new 2.5Kw unit...

I'm sorry, but I'm still a newbie that is happy just to get an Ametek motor working after lurking/reading here for 2.5 years.  Why do some want a monster for their very 1st rig?

To make a fortune selling juice to some utility, it's the in thing.

They sell a thing here that you can put on your roof and save 1/3 of your electricity bill, it works in towns with no wind and is rated at 1kW in a gale and with a bit of luck the government will pay half the cost.

Think what you could do with 10kW.

Maybe he should start by looking into the cost of manufactured grid tie systems.  That should give him an upper limit to the cost.  He could also research the wind conditions in his region.
