New Project Newbie
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:29:22 PM »
Ok I have been reading up a bit on some of the other projects people have been working on.  I have 48 1x2x1/2 inch N42 grade magnets and 10.5 pounds of 16 gauge wire.  I am planning on using 22 inch diameter 1/2 inch steel magnet rotors with 24 magnets on each one and using 18 coils in the stator, roughly 25-26 inches in diameter including the bit to bolt on to.  I have an old 120 volt D.C. input UPS  that I am hoping to use to convert into a.c. (an old Exide electronics 3KW UPS, it is pretty heavy with out any batteries)  I am probably going to have to get another spool of magnet wire and go 2 in hand to wind the coils.  I am planning on making the coils about 3 inches by 4 inches with a 1 x 2 inch hole in the center.  I was going to go 24 inch diameter magnet rotor but then it seems as if the spacing between magnets and coils get a little out of wack.  Does my figuring sound o.k ?  Thanks in advance.  Oh and has anyone ever used one of these older UPS's before?

What will you use to spin the rotors (wind, hydro, deisel)?

Oops, Sorry, I plan to use wind.  I wanted to test the output of it before I build the blades to match it.

You would probably get better proportions with 20" discs, but 22 should be ok.

I assume you are going for 120V.  I don't think you have a chance of using 2 in hand #16. you may get to #15 or a bit thicker.

If you have #16 you could likely use that and reduce to about 18" discs. You will need more wire I think.

You will need batteries for the ups which I assume you realise.

Should make a 14 or 16 ft prop depending on your wind speed.

Hi Flux, I was thinking I would probably use a 16 foot prop.  With the magnet discs I have not gotten them cut out yet but I was calculating the magnet spacing and it seemed  that with 24 magnets per rotor and with about a 22 inch diameter discs the magnets would be spaced similarly to the ones on the 500watt turbine in Hugh Piggott's book, but I may not have looked it over carefully enough. I may be able to return the 16 gauge wire I have and trade it in for 15 or 14, also I do need batteries for the ups so I am debating on wether or not to use it and spend on a bunch of batteries or maybe get a 48 volt ups.  Thanks for your comments and advice.

So am I correct that your suggestion would be to use a single wire to wind the coils of #15 or #14 ?  Thanks. Oh and I just figured it out again and it would be closer to use 20 inch discs as opposed to 22 inch discs.
