Bent shaft on ametek 50 pmm
« on: September 05, 2006, 07:01:46 AM »
I bent the shaft of my ametek 50 when the cable of my telescoping tower broke and the center tower fell straight down 20 ft. this caused the shaft on the motor/generator to bend. is this fixable? is there any easy way to straighten it out?

If anyone knows any tricks to this let me know I hate a good motor to go to waste.

I had mine fixed by the same guy who straightened my bent Briggs mower crankshaft - a local lawn mower repairman.  The mower is still running and the ametek ran for two years until it died for other non-related reasons.  Good luck!

Easy as pie...fasten it between two heavy

angle iron top and bottom get a large fine thread bolt

make a concave groove on the top of the bolt

to fit the shaft...a nut to fit the bolt....

another nut larger to fit under the nut...a

couple of large washers ...some grease and some

large wrenches.....now with the bent shaft

bending down jack it up a little ...loosen

turn shaft ...repeat until the shaft runs true

I've straightened briggs crankshafts in similar fashion to where some tissue paper just rubbed between

the bolt head and shaft 360 degrees ....

close enough !

Thanks deloiter and Norm.

sounds like a good idea.

I will first try it myself and if that dose not work I will take it down the street to the lawnmower guy.

If you have a dial indicator you can get it

perfect doing it Norm's way.[0-runout]

use redibolt to clamp motor front and back end...

 Use large wrenches.

     Tremendous power   Fun!

(No motors were harmed in these pictures)

Have mercy on the bearings!

Before you perform such an operation, take the rotor out and mount it in such a way that it can take all the forces. Doing such a realignment operation in-situ, with the axle still in the motor, is not the correct procedure.

BTW, the method works. I've done it once too, but mounting it in a lathe. Worked fine, and easy to dial to see the amount of runout.
