Rotor Magnetic Polarity
« on: September 10, 2006, 03:41:16 AM »
Hi People,

10' Wind Turbine w/ 12 magnets per 12" rotor & 9 coils.

I just placed my magnets on my rotors and glued them down - then I found a spare magnet and re-checked polarity.  I think I screwed up.

The twelve magnets of each rotor alternate polarity just fine.

However the TDC (Marked) magnets on each rotor attract my test magnet.

Oops.  I think I should have checked before I glued.

I was reading Hugh's book, and he indicates that it may be possible to rotate one of the rotors 90 degrees.  Possible?

If not I may be drilling out the rear rotor with a new 4 bolt pattern.

Has anyone made this mistake?

What's the best way to salvage the project.

One rotor is in the mold.

I appreciate any and all help.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete,

Been there done that, What kind of glue was used to hold them down ?

If it was super glue it is very easy to take the mags back off with a wood block and hammer.

Yeah I think a 90 degree shift would work.  Thie first quadrant would be north, south, north and the second quadrant (90 degrees around) would be south, north, south.  If you've got a 4 bolt pattern then you should be in good shape.

Don't forget to remark a new TDC point in case you take it apart in the future,

Thanks for the reply Zapmk.

T'was LockTite super glue.  Lots of it to be sure the edges of the magnets were sealed.  When knocking off the magnets - do they clean up OK?  Does the plating get damaged?  Do you clean up the rotor before placing the magnets back?

I really hope that I can rotate 90 degrees.

Thanks again.

Allright!!

That's what I was hoping for.  That takes some suspense out of waiting until assembly time.

I appreciate your help.

Yes 90 deg works for a 4 hole bolt fixing.

Superglue doesn't stick much and you would have no trouble removing the magnets without damage, but the 90 deg trick should get you out of trouble.

If you'r rotors are drilled out with 4, or 6 holes then you have no problem - just rotate one 90 deg.  If you've drilled out 5 holes then you need to either take the magnets off and put them down again - or...  redrill.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.
