Electromagnetic Generator Plans?
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:28:20 AM »
Hello,

I've built a few Hugh Piggot designed turbines, mostly for application in rural areas. One of the major costs is the neodymium magnets, which are also harder and more expensive to import in foreign, rural countries.  I'm wondering if anyone could point me to some equivalent designs (and let me know what some of the construction challenges are) to build an electromagnet generator instead of a permanent magnet generator.

Thanks!

The problems are very considerable.

You will not adapt the hugh Piggot types of design to electromagnet. The large air gaps mean that the field current would be so high that you would get nothing out.

You will need slotted iron cores with small air gaps, That effectively means modifying vehicle alternators or converting induction motors to wound field.

You will need machining facilities to make replacement rotors for induction motors.

Don't expect much in the way of low wind performance, if you are in a windy area you could do quite well.

Unless you have full workshop facilities you had better stick with large vehicle alternators and rewind for lower speed, results will be not very inspiring but you can make it work.

Probably the best compromise would be a good motor conversion with neo magnets, you will need less than for an axial air gap alternator. Performance in low winds will almost certainly be better than with a wound field unless you are very clever with trick than can make a wound field machine fairly reasonable.

The brushes are going to be a big problem to design ,build and maintain .You'll be messing around with that sooo long you won't finish and end up matching the $100 prictag of large magnets that make this design work.

Cec, here is a link to a ceiling fan conversion that uses ceramic magnets. I get 200 watts from it and it was made from salvaged parts.

Flux is one of the better informed ones on many of the old designs as these links to old threads show.

Good and covers you problem pretty closely

Ah here is one of the ones I was looking for but I swear there was a thread about a design that had a small pm genny mounted on the same shaft as a large field wound alt with the small pm supplying the exciter current for the large alt. It was supposed to be self regulating as the rpms controlled the amount of exciter current made so that the electric power curves matched the wind power curves pretty close.
