purchasing windmill blades
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:30:38 PM »
I nees a set of three 4' blades for a hugh piggot type windmill, does anyone know where I could purchase some?

I have had a blade broken by what I believe to be the tail hitting the blade tip in high wind, I have just go the machine running again after putting new blades on it and I am not making another set.

Well, I was also looking for a set of 4 Foot diameter blades, and ordered a set from Germany - metric conversion needed.

They were poor - I think your best option is to carve a new set, it can be quite fun.

I have not carved any yet but am in the process of.

Hughs blades are a lot 'stubbier' - it's a proven design many times over.

I am about to start making one set of Hugh's four foot blades, and two sets of his two foot blades in the next week or so. It's quite easy with the right tools and I can manage one well finished blade per day.

Your request is interesting, but how would you want the mounting ends (the root) to be finished? Would you want them to be square ended as per the original wood blank, or, cut to 120 degrees so that they fit together ready for mounting on a hub unit?

Do you have any preference for the type of wood to be used? Other caveats with buying pre built blades are they should be cut from the same plank of a tree, not three different trees, otherwise the wood mass will be different as will be the weights, which all affect final balancing. Should they be bare wood finished or paint finished, if the latter, colour required?

You may find it quicker and easier to manufacture your own given the points mentioned above.

I think you and order directly from OtherPower.com.  That's where I got my parts.  You can probably tell them your blade requirements and they will make a set for you.

Here are a few ways I use my 49" blades.

This is on an 8" dual rotor. it cuts in around 7 mph and hits 650 watts at 30 mph.

Blades after assembly at my back yard blade factory.

Extensions if you need over 5FT.

work well with motor conversions or Ametek also.

this is a down wind F&P.

add a nose cone if you like.
