Wire Upgrade
« on: January 07, 2007, 06:13:00 AM »
Just coming off of two weeks Christmas vacation and the only thing I managed to do was replace about 60 feet of 10 guage extension cord from my turbine to the battery shack with some aluminum triplex I happened across. No idea what the guage of the aluminum is,but what a difference!I'm getting a good 10 amps in very low winds compared to the nearly nothing through the extension cord.Had winds of 12-15 mph the other day and saw 50 amps steady where it used to struggle to put out 25 through the cord in the same wind. The best part was the wire was free.I did have to shell out for the anti-corrosion paste though....

Aluminum wire has a tendencny to heat and shrink in time.  As a suggestion go back and tighten the wires after a month or so. Also check for dicoloration on the wire connections which would be a possible indication of over heating.

I bet you can notice that your mill doesn't have to spin up that fast too.

I coated all the connections with compound and used the correct connecting lugs which are crimped on in a jig using a hammer.I doubt they'll ever come loose but I will be keeping an eye on everything due to all the taboos associated with aluminum wire.Nothing to loose really, other than my time and a few lugs.I really had my heart set on some 3/0 copper direct burial cable but haven't seen any at the local scrap yard yet.....
