4 blade idea
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:14:36 AM »
i am just about finished with my 1hp conversion, and i am tossing around blade

design ideas.

im shooting for an 6-8ft diameter, (approx 750 watts, i will know better after run

some tests).

anyway , here is a krazy 4blade idea i had.  If someone could point out the error

in my ways, or at least talk me out of waisting my weekend  sucking sawdust for no

good reason...

this is of course only half of it. two of these would lock together to make the 4 blades.

the root of the blade is a bad place for a stress riser. . . .AKA a rapid change in cross-section.  set it to furl early.

other than that, and the reduction in efficiency from the extra blade, it SHOULD work.

I would NOT be the first in line to buy a set, though. Nor would I linger at the foot of your tower.

and because someone WILL ask, I might as well be the one:

what's wrong with the Piggot/DanB hub/blade configuration?

I say go for it.

in my opinion it is not as good as a 3 blade but if you

connect it correctly it should be just as safe as any other blade.

I have seen several other people do the same thing with good results.

the only draw back is the added drag you add to it with the 4 blade.

It isn't as strong of a joint ...Why waste your

time making an inferior joint, when it won't take

any longer to make a good one?

....No need to be sucking sawdust if you use

renewable energy....Muscle Power! A hand saw,the

sawdust falls to the floor...you can saw boards..

in the kitchen even...

I did exactly that on my 3 meter blades.  I believe the center hub is sufficiently strong.  I epoxied the heck out of the joint.  See my diary photos for more finish pics.

ok, what if the joint was smaller, and covered on both sides by metal plates (bolted on)?

and what if the 4 blades are thinner than the equivolant 3 blade design? ( ie, a smaller, limited chord width)

My

$0.02

And Not worth that!

"waisting my weekend  sucking sawdust"

If I was to spend some time making sawdust

I'd for sure be making the 3 blade set-up.

Yeah my thoughts too...I always have trouble

getting the angles 120 degrees ....but nothing

that duct tape...3 or 4 sticks of special hot glue

 and a big hammer won't fix !

           like Merle Haggard sings....
