Few more Q's on the 20 footer...rotor diameter

Hi Dan,


Reviewing your 20' article you stated you wanted to get 45 turns of #14 on the coils but could only get 45 turns of #15. How close was it to not fitting? .10" or .25" etc.?  If I were to make the rotor 24" and the stator 30", do you think that extra 1" in radius would allow enough room to get the 45 turns of #14? I'm shooting for 5KW at 40KPH with 20' blades on this alternator.


I have my machine shop all ready to go with the plasma cutter but don't want to commit until I make sure I'm only going to do this once.  :-)

Well, it took a little searching for arc length formulas and it really hurt my brain but I figured out that going up 2" in diameter on both the rotor and stator will give me an extra .21" between the coils. I hope that will be enough to let me use #14 wire.

A couple of things. This entry is better suited for a diary. In fact, a diary is a lot easier on finding stuffs. This goes for all of us.


In doing some research on winding 'string' I found the density one can wind wire is ~60% of solid. For example (truely made up numbers here), If I had a square inch of winding area and my wire had a cross section of .01", I could get 60 turns (and maybe a bit of puffin or seagull) in.
