Torque Motor
« on: April 18, 2007, 11:06:32 AM »
Hello all, I was having some drive issues at work with some old Torque motors (which we hardly have any problems with) and was looking into other variable speed controller options (currently using autotransformers). I had never really looked into seeing how a torque motor worked. Well what I have found Torque motors are frameless kit motors consisting of a permanent-magnet rotor and laminated stator and are brushless (the real old units did use brushes). So from am I correct in thinking that these are similar to a pancake motor and would be a possable alternative for a wind turbine? Of coarse depending on what the Voltage to rpm would be.

Thanks for any input              Free RE for ME

The motors we use are Saco Lowell Winder (which is the manufacturer of the machine)

  1. in lb Torque
  2. RPM
  3. V
  4. Ph
  5. Hz
  6. 0 Amp

I believe that torque motors are not that uncommon (not nearly as common as induction motors) but the type I am dealing with are from a USA company.

I'm another "total newb" here, but that design looks (to me anyway) very similar to those washing machine motors that people are using for wind gennys. I've been working in  the industrial maintenance field for over 10 years now, in many different venues including machine tools, but I haven't run across one, yet. I'd like to get ahold of one though, I'd bet they would work pretty good as a generator!

"You intrigue me with this machine, Senor..."

Cheers!

Many of these are used for web tension, constant torque even at 0 RPM. So is this a resonable motor for wind?

Anyone? Flux? Nando?
