Found on the farm
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:17:37 AM »
Hi guys and girls

I was invited yesterday to have a free rummage through a farm shed that was due to be pulled down

 for any thing I wanted.

I got a clipmaster 51 , a 6 inch backsmiths leg vise and a small pumper windmill, but couldn't find the tail.

The windmill is a 4 and a half ft one and will need new blades as whoever recovered it seems to

have rolled it up the up paddock and mangled the blade ends.

My (not so) cunning plan is to use this old pumper to lift my domestic water from my ground level tank

(filled with rain water off the roof) to my 15 ft high 900 litre header tank .So I can reduce use of my

 12 volt pump.I'm off grid.

As I live in a light wind area I plan on increasing the diameter to 5 and a half ft when I replace the blades,

So...

The offset is 3 inches, Is this enough for this type of mill to look at self furling ? and should I ?

There are some old linkages left and it looks as if it may have been manualy furled and has a little brake

 on the hub rim .

Hope this isn't too off topic.

Cheers

Keith

Sorry mate , no digital camera.

I'm talking about the offset as being the windmill's horrizontal axle shaft  is 3 inches to one side of the vertical

centre line of the pivot bearing.

Cheers

Those mangled blades can probably be straightened with a bit of work. I doubt you would need to increase diameter.

I am curious to which make mill and if it is open geared, enclosed gear or direct drive.

Hi Ron

Its open geared 4 to 1 with tapped holes on the big cog  for the big end , seemingly for different length of stroke. Possibly NZ made.
