Have I gone too far in the Wrong direction with this mount ?
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:25:42 PM »
Hi all I have trolled through the site ,and found quite a few mounting ideas especially some of your senior posters "z" ,which looks absolutely fantastic workmanship ,However I have produced the mount which you can see in the following pictures ,the guys from back shed.com have been great in helping to Identify I have a problem, re -tail boom and Furling which I want to incorporate but at the time I was welding this up just did not think enough about!!!! the only thing which has put me off scrapping this mount is I do not trust the welds that are on the motor, for a side mount like the name which the checker will not let me put in ? "Z",and I do not want to strip the motor down to reinforce the welds as I am not wanting to rewire it, or indeed have the expertise, or time as the whole project is done when I have a bit of spare time at work !!!

Thanks for any help Phil

PS. sorry if this is not in the correct section etc.. first post

Phil,

DEPENDS?

That mount looks ideal for a tiltup whereby you allow to rotate the entire motor/rotor assembly in a vertical orientation with a furl stop at 45 degrees (or whatever).

A forward stop keeps it from getting too close to the tower ( ie 5 degrees?)

It those designs, the tail is attached rigidly to swiveling assembly you have already.

Weight of tail becomes irrelevant

The off-balance force is easy to calculate as in this thread:

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2004/4/26/101410/698

simply:

P= 0.0026 X (Area) X (wind velocity ^2)

a small pair of springs keeps it from popping up and a digital postal scale can determine the offset weight you need.

This is exactly what I am currently designing for an 18 footer with a furl at 20mph

weld a new mounting plate over overhang on the existing metal in a size that will allow 5 or 6" offset from tower head and forward enough for blade clearance, now you can add a tail hinge, pepa.
