Crazy wind art...
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:04:20 PM »
  I ran across this the other day and thought I'd share it if you haven't already seen it.

  This guy builds wind creatures that walk accross the beach using wind as their only source of energy.  It's incredible how smooth these things can walk.  Their huge but carry their weigh very well...

Ed,

 Dont get any crazy ideas that you could build these to spy on chicks on the beach.

 Some are huge and carry weight well.

 Well i guess you always say to have fun.:+}

I like the one that looks like a whole crowd of people carriing something accross the beach the best. He is obviously an artistic and mechanical genius. If only he would catch the 'windmill bug' also! A windmill that walks and runs around in your yard!

  I thought of building one using an old bike in the center.  Since it works off the main crankshaft I'll bet it wouldn't be to hard to pedal!  Think the police would pull me over after leaving the local pub?

  I found the one with the wave wing fairly interesting as it was turning the crank sitting in one place.  Did you notice he was using a compressor and bottles to store some of the energy.  One of them would actually drive a pin into the beach, basically stake itself to the ground, if it got to windy.

  I was pretty amazed at the creativity and simply had to share the find.

Mad genius.

I like the fact that they can act like simple insects - sensing dry sand or water and going the other way is just awesome. It would be cooler if they served a useful purpose though, like picking up trash. But then I guess we don't want to encourage people to litter, thinking a windbot will pick it up later.

Maybe one day we'll see something based on his art/work roaming another planet or moon.
