Wind power
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:21:37 PM »
A friend posed this question to me, and I have to admit I was stumped.

"If water energy is 'hydro', Sun energy is 'solar', Earth energy is 'geo-thermal'.....what's wind power called?"

Too simple.

Atmospheric, of course.

You're right. That is simple. Perhaps that's why it didn't occur to me. Thanks.

Its solar energy. Every aspect of the wind is created from the Sun's solar heat.

jmk;

In that case, all of it is solar sourced. Even the geothermal probably could be considered if you accept the planet being part of the original solar mass.

I am no expert but solar heat drives winds and the same heat and winds drive rain pretty much for sure. The geothermal is a stretch depending on the definition of "solar" as a source.

Always lots of ways to look at stuff.

Cheers.

Solar energy (also knows as solar radiation or insolation) is energy from the sun. This energy, in the form of heat and light, supports all life on Earth, drives the Earth's climate and weather and is predominately responsible for the class of resources collectively known as renewable energy.

In general its just called wind power, or wind energy. I just wanted to get the point out that wind is just a subcategory of solar energy.

I went to a renewable energy seminar and they stated that wind is actually solar too. That's why I commented about it the way I did. The simplest answer would be to call it wind, just as he was already called it.

So its nuclear (fusion), with a fairly complicated conducter. The line losses seem a little high.

Yup, that's the word I'd use.

sometimes spelt Aeolian

Ae·o·li·an

-adjective 1. pertaining to Aeolus, or to the winds in general.

           2. (usually lowercase) of or caused by the wind; wind-blown.

Techincally there is life on earth that doesn't require the sun.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/abyss/life/extremes.html

that is of course if we don't consider geothermal to be solar energy.

Hi:

Wind is really driven by two forces, the sun of course and the earths rotation. The thin film of air around out planet does have slippage as any gas or fluid does around something moving. This slippage causes heating and movement of the gas in relation to the earths surface. Also, allot of the heat that that rises from the earths core is do to radioactive decay of natural radioactive elements in the earth. The day to day sun's heating combines with the rest and gives us a fairly stable climate as things go...

The answer to the question, is Tom was right! Its all solar! I'm not just trying to bust bubbles but even gamma rays , and quasars from different galaxies are solar power.. nuclear power from the Sun in the form of plasma is  still called solar wind,  Nuclear power is just physics of the whole power supply. We are living in a nuclear world! That's why nuclear power is so strong! We are just riding the wake! Can I put it with that  many exclamation points?

You can actually skip wind! Build a solar collector and use it to boil steam. Store it or sell it

That's right, it's also spelled aeolian:

Pertaining to the action or effect of the wind. Derived from the name of the Greek god of the winds, Aeolus.
