a new rotor is born
« on: December 18, 2007, 11:23:43 PM »
hope i am in order with this diary post .

making the single rotor was fun. so when it came to making the stator i was looking farward to so much.

mixing and using fiber glass and resin is sumthing i am not happy doing as sumtimes its the resin that is control of things and not me.

if it were free then maybe i wouldent complain.  but living in the uk then us folk

need to complain about every thing. including the weather.

so getting to the stator. as i done before with rotor i turned my bottle gas heater on  to warm up my shack . its out doors in the garden.

i have been told  by my mate it needs to be 20c.

last time i was in my summer gear while making rotor it was so hot.

warming up in temp . i started to mix resin.   with a smile on my face i knew that verry soon i would be the proud owner of a fiberglass stator.

ive seen so menny pics on the other power site.

first bit done and glass in mould started to mix more resin.

now the sad bit .i heard a pop popping sound. i turned round and saw the gas fire had run out of gas.

baby it was cold outside and got colder bye the minit.

now in a panick i think i need to put more hardener in to make it set with its own heat.

the rest i cant remember . so i put lid on mould verry fast and put the menny screws in  . cordless drill at the ready.

next i saw resin comming out the pre-drilled holes i had made.

i dident think that would happen .

never happend with rotor. but thing is  put much more spare resin on top to try help with air bubbles.

nuthing but hurry hurry now and put all the screws in holes and screwed down tight.

lid went on great pushed surpless out ok.

but the pozi drive screws i used got filled with the surpless resin.

no sweat the job was done . i know it would be ok now.

so now im getting a bit cold and need to get a new gas bottle .

funny how every thing is like slow motion when your in a hurry.

back home with new gas i got fire going again. so happy now i had a cup of tea.

the spare resin had set good. but so had the resin in screw heads.

i tried to dig it out but such a hard setting mix.

i spent a bit of time making the mould and wanted to re-use it.

so i spent a while chipping the lib off.

i managed to get it out ok with no damage.

the rest you can see i pics.

i dont know what to call the holes on side of stator.

maybe there a bit like voids as a caster would do with smellting.

but there there as a reason .plz dont say im tight and wanted to save cash lol.

i am hoping thay will work with the rotor vanes and keep things cool/

its just me playing about with my mind. like how can i do that a bit better.

with the vanes a voids. im not sure of the outcome.

but can say the stator is over strong as it got loads of glass mixed in.

looking at stator outside the mould i found more air holes.

nuthing bad but thought maybe i can pretty it up with a few repairs.

now more sad things . it was a few days later i went to my shack to mix a wee bit more resin for repairs.

i never noticed outside temp was only 4c deg.

started to warm things up and mix resin . but it never went past 14c deg.

the gas fire wasent able to warm up whole garage . to menny drafts and things

so here i was with a verry sticky stator and rotor.

it was no good posting on here to ask for help.

but my wife did said you got to wait for spring to do such things.

but my nieghbour came to the rescue with big cardboard box and electric fan heater.

next time i can just put the mould in a box with fan heater if weather is so cold.

it all came out well and im happy with the way every thing looks.

its great reading about other guys making such things.

but its shear happyness when you pick up yuor own rotor and stator  saying look ive got bits to build a wind mill. small it may be .

not saying i couldent have built a big one first time -

but saying . maybe it was better for me to start small.

looks like summer needs to be the best time to mix resings and paint things.

and now i dread to try post pics. well on the same post ive just typed out.

as i lost a post before . that was my verry first post as a newbee and was written from the heart.  so i wont be brave and try load pics with this post.

Hi bleuyonder looks good, like the rotors.

Better mix raisin in a shed away from the house.

when I mix up raisin usually someone rings at the door,or the telephone is ringing.

Keep going the good work!
